Tis the season and you are probably getting ready to put up your Christmas Tree. Whether you are team “real tree” or artificial is your friend, there are a few things you should keep in mind when it comes to your tree and your HVAC system.
Pick a Winner
You may be singing “Oh Christmas tree” because you have found the perfect one. But make sure it’s not too dry by doing a needle test. Make sure the needles of your tree bend and don’t break. Also, make sure the tree you want doesn’t have too many needles falling off when you run your hand along the side. Then you can sing “how lovely are your branches”.
Beware of the dry tree
A higher temperature in your house can make the air dryer. Getting a whole-house humidifier can help with this. A dry tree can be a fire hazard. Loose and falling needles can also get swept into your vents affecting your air quality. If you don’t have a humidifier, be sure to keep your tree watered.
Location, Location, Location
Ready to rock around the Christmas tree? When deciding where to place your tree, choose a spot that is not over or too close to a vent or any heat source. Don’t place it next to any electric heater or fireplaces. This can cause the tree to dry out even more and even overheat. This could be a fire hazard.
The only White Christmas you want this year is from snow, not dust. If you are pulling the fake tree or your silver bells out of the attic, give everything a good dusting and then vacuum the floors. This will help keep your filters cleaner and protect your indoor air quality. Check your filter before you put up your tree and every week while its up.
